Hi!
Finally, Spring has sprung in Ohio Amish Country. We have even had a few spring thunderstorms.
I put some new pictures on the Album page of my website, so check them out. They are all pictures I have taken at various benefit auctions in the area. Speaking of benefits, if you are in the area on May 12th, that's the one at the Holmes County Training Center, north of Millersburg. I have posted more information on the Calendar. There's a lot of things going on this Saturday, May 5th, so check them out.
Don't forget Mother's Day is May 13th. I have a few potholders left, but very limited colors, so if you are interested, email me first to see what I have left. And doubt that I could get a basket to you in time. They take a little longer since I don't keep them in stock and have to order them from the Amish ladies.
Oh, May 17th is Ascension Day, 40 days after Easter, so there will be no sale in Kidron that day, and all "Amish" businesses will be closed, plus some of the restaurants. Don't stay home because of it......there will still be plenty of stores open.
Many fields are plowed, some planted and some oats are coming up already, so if you come soon, you may see scenes like the picture above.

Starlight Antiques
Starlight Antiques is the name of the new antique store in downtown Millersburg. Caren Starr and her husband Phil, who have had a shop in Millersburg for many years, have moved into the building where Nattie's Antiques used to be, next to the First Knox Bank on the north side of W. Jackson St.
I was in there the other day and I really like the way it is set up. They have everything from country to Victorian to hunting and fishing, advertising, etc., as well as folk art and accessories. The basement holds their furniture in the rough, if you would rather do it yourself!. Of course, it all looks great in this old building with the beautiful tin ceilings.
The Antique Emporium, where the Starrs used to be, is still there across the street. Besides the antiques and collectibles, you'll find Diane Graebner prints of the Amish, plus a huge selection of old books, and the owners hand made jewelry. She even makes jewelry out of the round keys off antique typewriters that are REALLY NEAT! Stop by and tell her you read about it here!!
By the way, these stores are open on Sunday.

Thrift Stores
Second- hand or thrift stores seem to be quite popular now and there are several in the area. A new one has opened in Berlin called Share & Care. It is located on US 62 on the west side of the road, just past the road that goes back to the Farmstead Restaurant. Open 9-5 weekdays and 9-2 on Saturday. It is a non-profit organization that helps the poor in Haiti.
I had mentioned before the MCC Connection in Kidron next to Central Christian School. Very nice and clean, and set up like a regular department store.
In Millersburg, there are two. Last year, Goodwill put up a brand new store on the south end of town right at the traffic light near the Comfort Inn. Across the street is an even newer thrift shop called Save N Serve, also a non-profit run by the Mennonite community. It is a big store with lots of stuff at a fair price also to benefit the poor. By the way, the help is all volunteer in the ones run by the Mennonites.

Author Wanda Brunstetter in Holmes County
Some of you may remember that I met Wanda Brunstetter last year when she was in Berlin for a book signing. (I put a picture of us together in this newsletter). Well, she will be here again in a couple weeks promoting her new book, "A Sister's Secret", a fictional story based right here in Holmes County. I can't wait to read it! It is the first of a 3 part series, Sisters From Holmes County.
I'll see if she will sign a few copies for me!
Wanda has several different series of books, including Brides of Lancaster County and Daughters of Lancaster County, both based in Pennsylvania, where her husband grew up and attended a Mennonite Church.
I love her new Cookbook called Amish Friends Cookbook.
It not only contains recipes from the Amish, but the lead
page of each chapter has something about the culture....
the schools, weddings, etc. Wanda's Christian faith is also
apparent with her choice of Bible verses and sayings
scattered throughout the book along with Doyle Yoder's
It's a beautiful cookbook as you can see by the picture! And it's
just as pretty on the inside!

Keim Lumber Company Grand Opening, May 2-5
I think all of Charm is celebrating the opening of the new Keim Lumber building. It has been a long time coming. They broke ground in the summer of 2002. It took nearly a year just to do the excavation, moving 8500 tandem loads of dirt.....that's a lot, I saw the size of the hole!!
It is an amazing place with a showroom of 104,000 square feet, with 150,000 square feet of warehouse. This is not your typical lumber company! Never was. You will be amazed by the quality of construction, the beautiful displays, the selection, etc. There's even the Carpenter's Cafe, where you can get breakfast or lunch. That's on the 2nd floor. But don't worry there are several sets of elevators (and 19 restrooms!)
The middle of the showroom has a 32 foot clock tower with a clock on all 4 sides. And wait till you see the pieced wood logos built into the floor and the ones on the walls. You'll just have to go see for yourself. I have put more details including location, on the Calendar.
A lot of the other stores in Charm will be having specials during the Grand Opening, too.
