December 1, 2007
Hello again!
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We did, although it started off kind of rough when our son called late Weds. night saying they had had an accident in Columbus on their way to our house. It was a little nerve wracking, but by 2:00 in the morning, we had them here at our house and all was well! Thank God they only had a few bumps and bruises. See..... always something to be thankful for!
I suppose some people are done with their shopping already....not me! I know there were a lot of people shopping here in Amish country last weekend....the stores were busy. And in spite of the cold, there was a good turn out for the Nativity Parade in Berlin and the Santa Parade in Millersburg. BTW, the Amish Flea Market's last day open is December 15, until reopening in the spring.
Since last issue, we also attended the Open House at The Victorian House Museum......it is really pretty this year! A lot of people went through the house that night. And they have a great gift shop on the 3rd floor. It is one of the stops on a bus tour I will be helping with next week.
If you order anything from my website for a gift, I usually mail them out the same day I get the order if I can. Just allow plenty of time for the mailman to get it delivered!!
Merry Christmas to you and yours and don't forget the
reason for the season.

PS Just read where Keim Lumber will close Dec. 21 and
not reopen until Jan. 2.

GATHERED TREASURES
TICK TOCK CLOCK GALLERY
BERLIN HOTEL & SUITES
NORTHEAST OHIO SPORTSMAN'S SHOW
SPEAKING OF CHRISTMAS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gathered Treasures
There's a new store in Berlin! It's called Gathered Treasures and is is located at 5045 SR 39 where Berlin Gardens used to have their retail store. (Berlin Gardens still has their green house and gazebo business located on the lower level behind.)
Vintage & old tattered treasures are mixed with new home and garden accents to give an eclectic cottage feel. We stopped in last week when we were out browsing and were real pleased with their quality, selection, and prices. Store hours are Mon-Sat 10-5. FMI call 330-893-1484.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tick Tock Clock Gallery
Another new business! Tick Tock Gallery opened recently at 144 W. Jackson St. in downtown Millersburg.
Beside having pictures, clocks and other items for sale, owner Jan Robinson also does watch and clock repairs. (This is the type of business you don't see much of anymore, so be sure to save this information.)
I'm going to have him repair an old mantle clock and an old cuckoo clock we have in our family. For hours and other information call 330-674-0149 or 419-685-3969.

Berlin Hotel & Suites
If you have been to the Berlin area this summer, you
probably noticed all the construction and changes at
the intersection of CR201 and SR 39, just 1 mile west
of Berlin.
What used to be the Dutch Harvest Restaurant was sold
and is now Troyer's Country Dining. It has been painted
and spruced up and is now one of our favorite places to
eat. The food is really good. We go to the Sunday breakfast
buffet quite often.
Renamed Berlin Hotel & Suites, the building behind Troyer's used to be called the Amish Country Inn. It was almost 20 years old and needed to be updated just like the restaurant. Also in the complex was a fitness center. The renovation, which will be completed this winter, will join the hotel and fitness center and spa into one unit with indoor pool, sauna and hot tub.
The facility will have 69 rooms when completed, with about 50 open right now. There are 4 types of rooms, from the economy up to the deluxe rooms and suites (which feature whirlpool tubs, custom woodwork, chandeliers, fireplaces, and 50 inch flat screen TVs.) Regular rooms have their own 42 inch plasma TV.
Free continental breakfast included.
There will be meeting rooms for small conferences and seminars and even a theater room with its own kitchen and restroom where small groups can get together, eat, and watch TV and sporting events, etc. The executive center and conference rooms will have the latest multimedia equipment, so I imagine there will be all kinds of meetings taking place there. All in all, a nice addition to the area.

Northeast Ohio Sportsman's Show
Hunting season is here and that is a big deal here in Ohio Amish Country. In fact, many of the Amish businesses close the first day of deer season. I know there are a lot of deer in Ohio, but it is always amazing to me how many deer are "harvested". Ohio deer population is estimated to be 675,000.
This show was held in Charm last year at Keim Lumber's new building before they opened and at Kidron Sports, and they were surprised at the number of people who came. So this year, P. Graham Dunn will host the show at their soon-to-be-opened huge new facility along US 30 near Dalton, OH. (In 2009, it will be held at the new convention center that will take the place of the Amish Flea Market at Walnut Creek.)
Hunters can bring in their deer antlers to have them judged by the Buckeye Big Bucks Club. They have some sort of a system for rating and grading the antlers. The show is expected to draw more than the 10,000 people who attended last year. A Larry Gatlin concert will add the final touch on Saturday night.
The men can go to this show and the ladies can go shopping!!

Recipe from Amish Country
The cold weather makes me look for rib-sticking, belly warming recipes, like this:
Scalloped Potatoes and Pork Chops
5 cups peeled and thinly sliced raw potatoes
1 cup chopped onion
Salt & pepper to taste
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 c. sour cream
6 pork loin chops (1 inch thick)
Chopped fresh parsley
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In greased 9 X 13 baking pan, layer half the potatoes and onion and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Repeat layer. Combine soup and sour cream and pour over potato mixture. Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in skillet, brown pork chops on both sides. Place pork chops on top of casserole. Cover and return to the oven for 45 minutes or until pork chops are tender. Uncover during last 15 minutes of baking. Sprinkle with parsley. Yields 6 servings.
