January 1, 2008
Happy New Year from Ohio Amish Country! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and that the New Year will be all you hope for. May 2008 be great!
We are getting snow as I write this and the forecast is for 6-10 inches of the white stuff before Weds. night. We will be watching the Rose Bowl game tonight as we want to watch Illinois beat LSU!
We had a great time visiting family in Illinois for a week. Always nice to get back home though and I am anxious to get "back to normal", whatever that is!
Last issue I mentioned how the Amish celebrate Old Christmas, or Epiphany, on January 6th. Normally all the Amish businesses are closed for Old Christmas, but since it falls on a Sunday this year, and they will not be open anyway, it shouldn't affect your shopping in the area. Here is a webpage that tells about Epiphany, if it is new to you. http://www.crivoice.org/cyepiph.html
Remember that Chit Chat is published once a month Jan. - March. Also, the Victorian House Museum in Millersburg is now closed until April.
Hope you enjoy this isssue!

Wineries in Ohio Amish Country
There seems to be a lot of interest in buying Ohio wines. Maybe it's because we are famous for our cheese and wine and cheese seem to go together. Anyway, here is a list of a few of the wineries in the area, in no particular order. As you can see by the addresses, they are very close together.

Classic in the Country
This will be the 5th year for The Classic in the Country Challenge, girls basketball tournament, which has become one of the best high school sporting events in the state. Held each January over the Martin Luther King weekend, it has been a real boon to the area, as it brings shoppers into the area at a relatively slow time of the year.
Beginning Saturday, January 19, seven games will be played, six on Sunday and seven more on Monday the 21st! Ohio's best teams will be playing against schools they wouldn't play in their division, so it makes for some pretty exciting games. The event is held at Hiland High School, about 1 mile east of Berlin on SR 39. The facility is great too!
You can get the schedule, list of teams, etc., at their website at www.classicinthecountry.org You might want to call ahead for hotel/inn reservations just to be sure.

Berlin Pajama Party Sales
This event is usually held the last Saturday in January, although I haven't heard anything official yet. The stores in Berlin open early, around 6:00 for special sales. The only catch is you have to be wearing your pajamas to get the discounts! Several years ago there were about 500 people line up in their "jammies" at 5:00 waiting for the stores to open.
If it's REALLY cold, wear your bathrobe and long undies!! Have fun!
